An archeological dig in 2010 uncovered Bury St Edmunds Bronze Age origins. They also identified Roman artefacts. The city was a royal borough with the Saxons and acquired its title on account of it remaining the burial position of King Edmund The Martyr, who was killed by the Danes in 869.
